INTRODUCTION TO VOICEWORK

What is voicework? It is a practice that helps the performer bridge the gaps between what they think and how they feel, and it allows emotions to be expressed freely through the body on the breath. Have you ever seen an actor who seems to act from the neck up, but doesn't know what to do with their hands? Have you ever been frustrated that the things you think get stuck inside your brain and don't flow out through your voice, coloring it with the nuances you desire, the way you intended? Do nerves seem to ruin your auditions because your breathing gets tight or your shoulders shoot up to your ears or you feel unbalanced on your feet? All of these problems can be addressed by studying voicework. Joshua E. Feliciano-Sanchez Moser is currently the interim Head of Voice and Speech for the Brown University/ Trinity Repertory Company, who is certified in both Fitzmaurice and Knight Thompson Voice Work. He will offer a short series of experience based exercises, that will allow you to begin crafting your own personal embodied vocal warmup or cool down. It is the "how you do it" step that might be missing from your existing training.
